I HOPE this is fixed. That got to be such a mess that I wiped the HDD & reinstalled XP. I've seen a few computers lately that have had Automatic Updates disabled and would not let me set it to anything other than disabled. See if that improves things. navigate here

Again. Run it regularily. That said, it might be worthwhile to keep tinkering with it in the hope that it will eventually be up to date. Possibly how they have their redirector made up in either the DNS or on a site somewhere.

It seems to be the initial contact with Windows Update that is at issue. It may also mess up booting from the old Windows partition so you need to know how to do Grub stuff if you want to fix that. The next morning I looked & low & behold there were 150 updates downloaded & waiting for me to install. Hopefully someone at Microsoft will figure out the problem and put things back the way they were before.
There are some "gotchas" in the install. Was able to get Windows Update working by the using the fix in this thread. Any chance newer hardware is triggering this? Just make sure it has a good anti-virus on it, and if you do choose to surf on it, don't use IE.
I rebooted. If I knew what fixed my problem, I'd mark something as a solution, but I think it was just the XP Ghost picking on me. Scroll down and run one of the automated "Fix It" options.
